The happy-go-lucky man we were accustomed to seeing oftentimes became dark and melancholy. It was hard for my mother to watch my father behave this way, and they began to fight. He also had a rough time finding work, which only contributed to his drinking. My father went away for a while and ended up working in New Jersey with one of his brothers. He would come home when he could, but for a long time he was a transient figure in our house. When he was home, he’d tell us about the various places he’d been.
One particular band tried to show us up by learning a song we liked to play in a different key. Most tenor players are comfortable with the key of B flat, but ask them to play the same song up a half step, in the key of B natural, and everything comes apart. I tried to adjust to the new fingering, but without practicing in that key, it was nearly impossible. Their little joke made us look really bad in front of the audience that night, but it taught me a valuable lesson: learn to play in all twelve keys.
Then, a few seconds later, we heard more shots—only this time they were louder. Whoever was out there was getting closer to the house. They were obviously not happy about the late-night partying and were on their way over to voice their displeasure. As much fun as we were having, the band realized it was time for us to call it a night and head home, so we began to break down and load up the car. To this day, I joke with Melvin about how fast he put his drums away. Normally he would take his time packing things up, but Melvin beat everyone into the car that night.
