During the academic year 19421943 I worked in Newark in a War Department agency that employed nearly ten thousand people, one-third of them black. This experience provided me with my first Page 7 significant contact outside of the Pioneer Youth Camp with college-educated blacks, and with two of them I formed close and enduring friendships. During this time my consciousness was raised by events such as the riots in Harlem and Detroit; the special issue of Survey Graphic entitled "Color: Unfinished Business of Democracy"; and the debate over the Red Cross's practice of segregating plasma in its blood blank, this last controversy especially ironic given the role of Dr.
The city boasted one of the most effective Urban Leagues in the country. More recently there had appeared a small interracial CORE group, whose membership overlapped somewhat with the Baltimore chapter of the Americans for Democratic Action which also had a civil rights agenda, although it did not involve direct action; and the Morgan State College students who each spring would mount demonstrations against one of the discriminatory business places in the nearby Northwood Shopping Center.
