Cohesion is the property that keeps the molecules of a liquid together and, in combination with surface tension, helps to make these many shapes possible. 1, cohesion is the attraction that exists between molecules in a liquid. Adhesion is the attraction between a liquid and any solid that it touches. It is the property that causes a raindrop to stick to a windowpane and bubbles of air to adhere to the side of a bathtub. It helps liquids to stay in containers, and it is necessary for capillary action to take place.
Unlike liquids, the molecules of a solid are not free to move about one another. They are in fixed positions and can only vibrate in place. Since the fundamental particles of a solid are in fixed positions, the shape of a solid remains the same regardless of where it is placed. Experimental evidence shows that the speed at which atoms and molecules move is related to their temperature. When heat is added to matter, the average speed of the molecules that make up that matter increases. Even the atoms or molecules in solids vibrate more rapidly as their temperature rises.
How does the detergent affect the rate at which the oil separates from the water? Why are detergents used to wash clothes? Pour some rubbing alcohol into a glass or beaker. Add a few milliliters of cooking oil. Which liquid is more dense? How can you tell? Using an eyedropper, try to make three distinct liquid layers of alcohol, cooking oil, and water in a vial or test tube. Does it matter in what order you add the liquids to the container? Which liquid forms the bottom layer? Which liquid is on top?
