A mathematical model was developed to calculate the weight required on a tyre/wheel assembly to balance wheel References and Abstracts nonuniformity effects such as lateral runout. A finite element model of a tyre mounted on a rigid wheel was used to simulate the free spinning about a skewed axis. The verification of the model and results of a Monte Carlo simulation are discussed. 1 ref.

T51-6 CONTACT PRESSURE DISTRIBUTION AND DETACHING PHENOMENA OF TYRE TREAD RUBBER UNDER COMPRESSION AND SHEAR FORCES Akasaka T; Kagami S; Shiobara H The critical conditions for detachment were determined using an approximation analysis of ground contact deformation in a rubber block under compression and shear. The energy method, which is based on a linear Hooke's law allowing for the incompressibility of rubber, was used. Good agreement between the analysis, numerical analysis and experimental data was achieved for contact pressure distribution and detachment conditions.

It was shown that, by addition of a phenolic novolac resin together with an NBR to the usual formulations, an increase of tan delta occurred in the range o to 20C without a significant increase in the region of 70C. These results indicated an improvement in wet skid resistance with no significant change in rolling loss level.
